First call to 911.....
No joke...tonight was the first and hopefully last time that we will EVER have to call 911 for one of our children. Tonight Olivia and I met my mom and friends Karen and Vickie for dinner at one of our favorite places - Great Lakes. (Jose was working in GRANT.) The night was fun and the conversation was great and Olivia was being her charming little self - smiling and waving to strangers and eating her goldfish crackers. It happened SO fast - but all the sudden she began choking on a goldfish and her face turned white and her eyes were so red. I quickly got up - and mind you - I am doing nothing quickly at the moment. I grabbed her and swept my finger to her throat to clear out the crackers...she was still gagging and gasping for air so I flung her upside down and began banging on her back and then she began to cry and throw-up. Okay - all should be fine right? Well she began throwing up blood...oh my gosh I was in shock. It was all over her highchair, her bib and her sweater....(in the meantime my mom called 911.) Olivia was screaming and by now we had several people helping us...and I honestly thought that I could have passed out. After a few minutes no further sign of blood and Olivia was still screaming and I thought if anything could put me in labor this could. Olivia began to settle down and was so cuddly with me....we were able to sit back down and wait for the EMT's. They came a minute later and looked her over and lungs were clear and they thought that either she bit down on her tongue while she was choking or I scraped her mouth with my finger nail when I got the crackers out of her mouth...but she checked out okay. By this time she was smiling again - in fact when the EMT said open up and say ahhhh....she did just that...she below. She bounced back much faster than her mommy will. I feel sick about it and in fact my mom had to come home with me for a bit and help me get Olivia off to bed...I needed the mental help more than anything. But she seems okay - went to bed well. And of course after all that someone got ice cream. It's amazing how fast things can happen - even when you have a close eye on them. I'm trying to figure out if I can crawl in her crib and sleep with her tonight......just kidding...but don't think the thought has not crossed my mind.
